Why Use a Bypass Oil Filter
The majority of engine wear comes from particles in the 5–25 micron range. An average full-flow filter is typically efficient for particles around 20 microns and larger, which means finer wear-causing material can still circulate through the engine (source: AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters product data bulletin). That’s where an AMSOIL bypass system makes the difference. It continuously filters a portion of the oil and removes contaminants down to 2 microns absolute on first use, which means the filter is rated to capture particles at that size at its published efficiency level, not just reduce them nominally.

Can oil drains be extended by using a bypass filtration system?
AMSOIL Bypass Filters are designed to filter out fine particles; they are not meant to extend oil change intervals beyond original recommendations. However, when fine particles are filtered out of the motor oil, it may be possible to attain longer drain intervals. This should be determined by used oil analysis. In addition, the use of an AMSOIL bypass system may allow for the use of larger oil filters, which can increase filtering capacity.
Does AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil affect new vehicle warranties?
Using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil has no effect on vehicle warranties. A federal law called the Magnuson-Moss Act (1975) prevents original equipment manufacturers from putting conditions on vehicle warranties attached to any product or service identified by brand, trade or corporate name, unless the manufacturer provides that product or service free of charge. This means consumers have the freedom to use aftermarket products of their choice without fear of losing the original limited or implied vehicle warranty. How a Bypass Oil Filter Works
Bypass motor oil filtration features a secondary oil filter with the purpose of eliminating nearly all contaminants from motor oil. An oil bypass filter has high capacity and eliminates much smaller particles than full-flow filters, including soot. Bypass filters reduce engine wear and increase oil volume, but their high efficiencies mean they also have higher restriction and must be used in conjunction with a full-flow filter.
Bypass filters operate by filtering oil on a “partial-flow” basis. They draw approximately 10 percent of the oil pump’s capacity at any one time and trap the extremely small, wear-causing contaminants that full-flow filters can’t remove. Bypass filters have a high pressure differential, causing the oil to flow through them very slowly and allowing for the removal of smaller contaminants. It is called bypass filtration because the oil flows from the bypass filter back to the sump, bypassing the oil flow needed for lubrication. This continual process eventually makes all the oil analytically clean, reduces long-term wear, and can support extended drain decisions when used oil analysis confirms oil condition.
Full Flow Filter vs Bypass Filter
Full-flow filters are more free-flowing than bypass filters, so they are able to support the flow of oil that lubricates the engine. Because they are more free-flowing they are less efficient at removing small particles. Mount the filter on a rigid structure close to the engine when possible, and keep it away from exhaust heat, moving parts, and road debris. Plan hose routing before drilling or tightening anything so you have clean pressure and return paths, enough bend radius, and room for service access.
