Challenges for Gear Lubes in Today’s Environment
A number of factors cause SUV, truck and van gears to operate under more severe conditions than over-the-road trucks, contributing to increased temperatures, higher gear loading and shorter drain intervals.
- First, these vehicles have smaller gears that must handle higher loads per square inch of surface area.
- Second, their smaller sump sizes (and lower volume of gear lube) cannot dissipate heat as well as larger sump sizes.
- Third, air flow is significantly reduced compared to over-the-road trucks.
- Fourth, these vehicles are subject to more frequent stop and go driving conditions and are more susceptible to moisture from condensation due to varying temperature fluctuations.

AMSOIL Slip-Lock® Differential Additive
AMSOIL Slip Lock Differential Additive is formulated for use with both synthetic and petroleum gear lubricants and safely replaces manufacturer-recommended friction modifiers. Its convenient squeeze-tube packaging provides quick and easy application to the gear housing. One four-ounce tube of Slip Lock treats differential capacities of two to four quarts. It is not for use in automatic transmissions or other applications requiring automatic transmission fluid.
AMSOIL Slip Lock® Differential Additive is formulated with advanced friction modifiers and is designed to eliminate gear-housing chatter in cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with clutch-type limited-slip differentials.
NOTE: AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes do not require this additive. However, not all differentials respond the same and the addition of AMSOIL Slip Lock will eliminate chatter in mechanically sound differentials.

What is thermal runaway?
The extreme loads, pressures and temperatures experienced by modern vehicles place increased stress on gear lubricants that can lead to a serious condition known as Thermal Runaway. As temperatures in the differential climb upward, gear lubricants lose viscosity and load-carrying capacity. When extreme loads and pressures break the lubricant film, metal-to-metal contact and increased heat occur. This increased friction and heat, in turn, results in further viscosity loss, which further increases friction and heat. As heat spirals upward, viscosity spirals downward. Thermal Runaway is a vicious cycle that leads to irreparable equipment damage from extreme wear, and ultimately catastrophic gear and bearing failure.
